1933 VFL Grand Final: Richmond v South Melbourne
Richmond finished 2 games plus percentage clear on top of the ladder, but lost to South Melbourne by 8 points in the Second Semi Final. The Tigers rebounded with a narrow win over the Cats in the Preliminary Final to set up a rematch in the Grand Final.
South Melbourne got off to a good start in the Grand Final kicking three goals in the first quarter while the Tigers kicked just the two behinds. Unfortunately for Richmond they never got back into the game. South had the game wrapped up with a 39 point lead at three quarter time. The Tigers managing to kick just 4.5-29 for the match. South Melbourne didn’t win another premiership for 72 years.
1934 VFL Grand Final: Richmond v South Melbourne
One year later, the Tigers again secured the minor premiership with a win over the Hawks in the final round. Richmond thumped Geelong by 78 points in the second semi final. South Melbourne defeated Collingwood and Geelong on their way to the Grand Final. This was the seventh time in eight years that Richmond had made the Grand Final but only had one premiership to show for their efforts.
This time the Tigers made amends in front of a crowd of 65,335. After a tight first quarter where only one point separated the sides, the Tigers ran away with the game after quarter time to set up a 60 point lead at three quarter time. Richmond celebrated their fourth premiership.
