1961 VFL Grand Final: Hawthorn v Footscray
For the first few decades after joining the VFL in 1925, both Hawthorn and Footscray spent most of their time in the bottom four of the ladder. After a number of winless finals campaigns, the Dogs broke through for their first premiership in 1954. By contrast the Hawks didn't even make the finals until 1957. So it was an unusual finals series to see Hawthorn, St Kilda and Footscray joining perennial finalist Melbourne in the top 4.
Hawthorn finishing on top of the ladder went straight through to the Grand Final defeating Melbourne by 7 points in the second semi final. The Bulldogs knocked off the Saints and the Demons on their way to the Grand Final. This was the first Grand Final since 1953 that the Demons hadn’t played in.
In front of 107,935 spectators, the Bulldogs worked their way to an eight-point lead at half-time, but were clearly struggling with the physicality of their hardened opponents. Bulldogs rover Merv Hobbs recalled eight players needing first aid, while ruckman John Schultz remembered: The selectors looked around and could see we were in a bad way. In those days, strange to realise, we didn't hydrate. We were told not to drink too much in case we got cramps. We just ran out of legs. And Hawthorn were brutal. They made every contest a physical clash. In the second half, the Hawks moved John Peck into the ruck and had Winneke and Hill crash into Schultz at every ruck contest. Hawthorn led by centreman Brendan Edwards, pulled away from the tiring Bulldogs, kicking ten goals to two to take out their first VFL premiership.
