The 1967 VFL Grand Final: Richmond v Geelong

The Tigers secured top spot on the ladder with a 12 point win against Geelong at Kardinia Park, the Cats finishing in third place. Richmond led all day against Carlton in the second semi final going straight through to the Grand Final. Whereas Geelong only shook Collingwood off in the last quarter of the first semi final and came from well behind against Carlton in the Preliminary Final. Richmond went into the Grand Final without ruckman Neville Crowe - suspended for striking John Nicholls.

A huge crowd of 109,396 were there for Richmond’s first Grand Final since 1944. The game started at a fast pace, both sides scoring well with Richmond 6 points in front at quarter time. The Tigers dominated the second quarter, though inaccuracy meant they only took a 16 point lead into the long break. Geelong came out firing in the third quarter with goals to Goggin, Andrews and Wade gave Geelong the lead. Two rushed behinds just before three quarter time meant the Tigers were 2 points in front at the final change. Geelong had their chances in the last quarter but kicked 2 goals 8 behinds. Richmond kicked 4 goals 3 behinds in the last quarter which was the difference in the end. The Tigers premiers by just 9 points in a classic Grand Final.

The 2020 AFL Grand Final: Richmond v Geelong

Fresh in our memories is the historic first Grand Final at the GABBA between the Tigers and the Cats.

While Geelong had dominated clashes against the Tigers for nearly four decades, the tables had recently turned and Richmond were the dominant side.

Early injuries to Vlaustuin and Ablett impacted both sides. While Richmond kicked the first two goals of the match, it was the Cats who held a 15 point lead at the main break.

After a quiet start to the game, Dustin Martin showed why he is a big-game player kicking four crucial goals. Geelong struggled to find the right match up for him.

While Richmond only held a 2 point lead at three quarter time, they had all the momentum and ran away with it in the last quarter to secure their third premiership in just four years.
