History of the Geelong v Hawthorn rivalry

The rivalry between Hawthorn and Geelong is arguably the greatest modern rivalry. It iss defined by two famous Grand Finals in 1989 and 2008. In the 1989 Grand Final, Geelong played the man, injuring several Hawks players. Mark Yeates knocked out Dermott Brereton at the opening bounce but Hawthorn controlled the game, leading by 30 to 40 points for most of the match. In the last quarter, Geelong almost managed to come from behind to win, but fell short by six points. Had the match ended in a draw, both sides would have had difficulty putting a team together the following week. In 2008 Grand Final, Geelong having only lost one match for the season was a hot favourite, but Hawthorn upset Geelong by 26 points. Geelong won its next eleven matches against Hawthorn over the following five years, all memorable matches including two after the siren victories. The so called "Kennett curse" was linked to comments made by Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett following the 2008 Grand Final. Years later it was revealed that after the 2008 grand final, Paul Chapman made a pact between other Geelong players to never lose to Hawthorn again. The curse was broken in the 2013 Preliminary Final when Hawthorn came from 20 points down at three quarter time with Shaun Burgoyne kicking the winning goal. The noise from the crowd was so loud in the dying stages of the match that the players didn’t hear the final siren.

Since 2010, these clubs have played annually in front of huge crowds at the MCG on Easter Monday.
