History of the Richmond v Essendon rivalry
Traditional rivals Essendon and Richmond have fought many fierce battles over the years. They have met three times in the Grand Final, in 1924, 1942 and 1943. The only finals encounter in the modern era was in the 1995 second semi-final where Richmond famously hauled back a five goal deficit to win their first final in 13 years. Since 2005, they have contested the annual Dreamtime at the 'G match, a celebration of Aboriginal players and their contribution to the league, typically held near the halfway mark of the season. The match is now associated with the pre-game ritual "The Long Walk", which is a charity inspired by former Essendon player Michael Long, who in November 2004 walked from his home in Melbourne to Canberra to get the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people back on the national agenda. On the day of the Dreamtime game, Long, and several other thousand participants walk from Federation Square to the MCG to promote reconciliation.
The Golden Ticket will donate $5 from every Dreamtime at the G match ticket or Dining package sold directly to The Long Walk.
