History of the North Melbourne v Essendon rivalry
The origin of this rivalry dates back to 1896 when Essendon blocked North Melbourne from joining the VFL as Essendon felt North Melbourne was too close geographically and could compete with them when recruiting players. Essendon and North Melbourne were both strong in the latter part of the 1990s and early 2000s, and built a rivalry during that time. At one point Kevin Sheedy told his players that North thought they were soft, then publicly questioned whether North officials Greg Miller and Mark Dawson were soft. "He'd be a pink marshmallow, Dawson," Sheedy said. "Miller would be a white marshmallow. That's about where I see those two softies."
It was a brilliant media stunt that attracted huge crowds to the matches, and saw Sheedy being pelted with marshmallows after the Kangaroos 1998 Qualifying Final win. The defining moment of this rivalry came in Round 16 of 2001, when Essendon came from 69 points down in the second quarter to win by 12 points. Essendon and North Melbourne have played in one Grand Final, in 1950, which Essendon won by 38 points.
