1945 VFL Grand Final: Carlton v South Melbourne
South Melbourne finished a game clear on top of the ladder and went straight through to the Grand Final. Carlton in contrast only secured a place in the top 4 be defeating the Bulldogs in the final round. Finals wins over Collingwood and North Melbourne saw Carlton through to the Grand Final.
The 1945 VFL Grand Final is famously known as the Bloodbath Grand Final. It is remembered as the most violent Grand Final in history. Ten players were reported for a total of sixteen offences. The timing of this match is interesting as it was played a few weeks after the end of World War 2. Ian Shaw who wrote a book on the Bloodbath Grand Final claims there is no connection between the War and the match. Martin Flanagan disagrees, having spoken to 11 of those who played in the match and believes that “what happened was that young men who hadn't been to war played a war game in front of a lot of young men who had”.
The game itself was played in front of 62.986 at Princess Park (the MCG still unavailable due to the war) in wet and muddy conditions. After a tight first half, Carlton went into the main break with a lead of just 2 points, but kicked away in the third quarter, winning their 7th premiership by 28 points.
